Kari Heistad Bio

Kari Heistad

My journey in photography began at age 16 when I received a travel grant from my local Rotary Club to document my year living with a host family in Norway. The grant funded 1,100 slides and their developing—a collection that sparked my lifelong passion for photography.

While photography has never been my full-time profession, I have always kept a camera close at hand. Over the years, I've sold work at craft fairs, created visual curricula about Maori culture in New Zealand, and spent a decade as staff photographer for Prost Soccer, covering the New England Revolution and regional soccer—an experience that taught me there are no second chances in sports photography just like there isn't when photographing my other love - wildlife.

I approach my work through a photojournalistic lens, doing little to no post-processing. What you see is what I witnessed through my viewfinder. My hope is that this authenticity allows viewers to experience the same emotions and wonder I felt while exploring, camera in hand.

Today, I focus primarily on visual storytelling found in nature. In addition to my books and marketing services for clients, I enjoy helping non-profit organizations that run special locations and support causes close to my heart. I enjoy using photography as a tool for conservation and advocacy.
